What is a ramekin?
Originally derived from the Dutch word "rammeken", it refers to a warm cheese-based pastry baked in a small dish in the oven. Today, this dish is still popular in Switzerland in particular, under the name of "ramequin au fromage". "Ramequin" has taken on a broader meaning, since it also refers to the small dish or mould used to cook a recipe in the oven or bain-marie. Ideal for cooking individual recipes, ramekins are mainly made of ceramic, glass or porcelain.
